Have you ever wished you could spend more time underwater on each dive? You’ve got the 15 litre cylinder, you’re more relaxed now that you’ve perfected your Buoyancy Control, and you’ve even learnt Enriched Air Nitrox Diving. But you still reach your limits of the RDP/computer with plenty of air left. What you need to do is to look at your dive planning from a different perspective, with the Multilevel Diver course.
By planning your dive as distinct levels, you are able to increase the time spent underwater, as you are crediting for slower nitrogen absorption when you ascend to a shallower depth
The ‘PADI Multilevel Diver’ specialty course is designed to be an introduction to multilevel diving and to help you develop the necessary skills, knowledge, and techniques.
Course Details
- The maximum number of students on each course is 4
- Each course is led by an Instructor, with an additional safety diver and surface support
- You will need to complete the ‘Multilevel Diver’ knowledge review from the Adventures in Diving manual, bringing the completed knowledge review with you
- There is a PowerPoint presentation prior to the in-water training, and two open water training dives, conducted during one day.
- Cost of the course is £135.00 inclusive
- If required we can supply the ‘Adventures in Diving’ manual for £28.50
Before Starting The Course
- You must be certified as an Open Water Diver or above
- You must be aged 12 years or older
- Please read and understand the medical questionnaire
- If you would like to use your own equipment then please check this against the minimum equipment required for this course.
Course overview
Within this course we are going to look at:
- planning, organisation, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards of multilevel diving.
- definition and advantages of multilevel diving.
- methods of calculating multilevel dives with eRDPml or computers.
- review of decompression sickness theory.
- review of emergency decompression procedures.
- review of PADI’s S.A.F.E Diver campaign.
- procedures for flying after diving
- guidelines, rules and procedures for multilevel diving with eRDPml and/or diving computers.
- care and maintenance of dive computers
Knowledge Development
Before starting the open water training you’ll need to complete the multilevel knowledge review from the adventures in diving manual. If you have completed the Advanced Open Water course then you should be in possession of this book. We can supply this manual if you do not have one.
There is also a power point presentation, which provides more detailed information of multilevel diving, which is conducted on an evening and normally lasts between 1 to 2 hours.

Multilevel Example
21% Oxygen (Normal Breathing Air)
Our Virtual diver ‘Dave’, conducts an open water dive on one of his favourite wrecks. This wreck sits in 24 mtrs of water. Using his Recreational Dive Planner, and diving on normal breathing air, he can make the following dive –
You can see that this dive lasts 29 minutes, with an ending pressure group of Q
21% Oxygen (Normal Breathing Air)
Conducting the same dive, but now as a multilevel dive, see what the increase could be –
‘Dave’ could spend 60 minutes in the water, doubling his dive time, and only ending four pressure groups higher as a U diver.
Multilevel 40% Enriched Air Nitrox Dive
Take the Enriched Air Nitrox Specialty and see, how you can increase further your dive time.
Open Water Training
Training Dive One – Depth Range 18 to 40 mtrs (certification level allowing)
You are going to calculate the no decompression limits of a two-depth level dive using the eRDPml. With the equipment on, and safety check carried out, we enter the water and descend to our first deepest depth level. We then carry out our dive as planned, monitoring depth, time and air supply, and ascend to our next shallower level.
It is very important, due to the extended time allowed in the water, that we ensure we avoid running out of air, disorientation and hypothermia.
Training Dive Two – Depth Range 10 – 30 mtrs (certification level allowing)
We carry out our second dive within the same parameters as dive number one, but this time we are going to plan and execute a three-depth level dive.
Course Fee Includes
- Electronic Recreational Dive Planner multilevel (eRDPml)
- Diploma & Chevron
- Certification costs
- All equipment*, air fills and entry fees
- Possibility of transport to and from the site (please contact us for details)
*If you are using your own equipment then please read and complete the Own Equipment Liability form
