West Country Divers

Continue with your exploration and excitement with the Adventures in Diving program.

The Advanced Open Water Diver is designed so that you can start it straight after your Open Water Diver course. This course helps you increase your confidence and build your scuba skills so you can become more comfortable in the water. This is a great way to get more dives under your belt while continuing to learn under the supervision of an instructor. This course builds on what you’ve learned and develops new capabilities by introducing you to new activities and new ways to have fun while diving.

Amongst other things, this course allows you to extend your diving range down to 30 mtrs.

Course Outline

To qualify as an Advanced Open Water Diver, you will complete 5 adventure dives. This introduces you to Underwater Navigation and Deep Diving, along with 3 dives of your choice.

Take a look at the list, and choose the 3 dives you can elect to undertake to complete your qualification

Remember -Each Adventure Dive in the Advanced Open Water Diver course credit’s toward the first dive of the corresponding PADI Specialty Diver course.

Boat Diving – Depth Range 6 to 18 mtrs.
Cost £65.00

With this dive we’re going to make sure that when you get on the boat you know what side is Port and where the Bow is! Once on the boat we’ll take a short ride out and get ready to for our dive. With all of our equipment on, and pre-dive safety check carried out, we’re going to demonstrate the correct method of entry for the boat we’re using.

With the group in the water we start an ascent down our line, and just have some fun.

The aim of this dive is to maintain good buddy contact during the dive, and to also demonstrate good buoyancy control so that there is no unintended and/or destructive contact with the bottom.

With the dive completed we signal each other to ascend, and perform a safety stop, and then rejoin our boat.

Digital Underwater Photography – Depth Range 4 to 10 mtrs.
Cost £50.00

After assembling our equipment, and carrying out the pre dive safety check, we enter the water in a manner that protects the camera system. Once in the water we’ll check the operation of the camera controls and ensure there is no water ingress.

We then descend, and ramble around under the water, taking as many photos as you like. We’ll also practice setting the white balance manually. The aim is to take as many photos close up, far away and at different angles.

We’ll end our dive by exiting the water, and protecting our Camera system, and review the pictures once out of the water.

Diver Propulsion Vehicle – Depth Range 6 to 18 mtrs.
Cost £50.00

We start this dive by looking at how we prepare the DPV for use. With our equipment on and pre dive safety check completed, you’ll demonstrate an effective water entry with a DPV, and conduct a short swim with the DPV on the surface.

Then we’ll make a proper descent with the DPV, and when underwater will carry out various manoeuvres, including straight and steady, depth changes and making pivot and banking turns.

We then have an underwater tour and also ensure that we maintain proper buddy contact underwater.

We finish the dive by demonstrating a proper ascent with the DPV, and when back at the shore look at proper post dive care of the DPV

Drift Diver – Depth Range 6 to 18 mtrs.
Cost £65.00

We’re going to take a short boat trip, and with all of our equipment on, and pre-dive safety check carried out, roll back off of the boat into the sea.

With the group in the water we start an ascent down our line, and when together at the bottom we’ll just go with the current.

The aim of this dive is to maintain good buddy contact during the drift, and to also demonstrate good buoyancy control so that there is no unintended and/or destructive contact with the bottom.

With the dive completed we signal each other to ascend, and perform a safety stop, and then rejoin our boat.

Dry Suit – Depth Range 6 to 18 mtrs.
Cost £50.00

You start this dive by donning the dry suit, BCD and remaining equipment, and after the pre dive safety check, enter the water and carry out a buoyancy check. Once completed we will then make a controlled decent, avoiding a suit squeeze, to the bottom. You’ll carry out a fin pivot, and then a hover for one minute, after which we can then enjoy the rest of the dive. During our dive you’ll need to demonstrate good buoyancy control, and avoid accidentally kicking up silt, or touching the bottom.

We end this first dive with a neutrally buoyant ascent from the bottom, and whilst on the surface conduct a weight belt and BCD removal/replacement.

Enriched Air Nitrox Preparation
Cost £50.00

For this dive we are going to undertake a short briefing on diving with enriched air, learn to analyse the contents of a cylinder, and set our computers to the correct mix. With this completed we’ll gear up, carry out our pre-dive safety check and enter the water. On this dive we do not have to carry out any specific skills, so it’s over to you to just take in the wonders of the underwater world and enjoy the dive.

Multilevel Diver – Depth Range 18 to 40 mtrs.
Cost £65.00

You are going to calculate the no decompression limits of a two-depth level dive using the eRDPml. With the equipment on, and safety check carried out, we enter the water and descend to our first deepest depth level. We then carry out our dive as planned, monitoring depth, time and air supply, and ascend to our next shallower level.

It is very important, due to the extended time allowed in the water, that we ensure we avoid running out of air, disorientation and hypothermia.

Night Diver – Depth Range 6 to 12 mtrs.
Cost £50.00

With equipment on, and pre dive safety check carried out, we enter the water just as the light begins to fade.
We carry out an underwater tour of the area, to demonstrate how we communicate with hand signals and dive lights whilst night diving. We also to need to demonstrate the proper use of a personal dive light, submersible pressure gauge, compass, timing device and depth gauge at night.

We have only one exercise to conduct; to navigate to a pre-determined location, using compass, and return to within 8mtrs of the starting point.

Wreck Diver – Depth Range 18 to 30 mtrs.
Cost £65.00

With equipment on, we carry out our pre dive safety check and enter the water.

On this dive we are just going to swim around the outside of the wreck, maintaining good buoyancy, identifying and avoiding potential hazards.

We get chance to look over and familiarise ourselves with the wreck, and also spotting the aquatic life that calls this wreck ‘home’!

We complete the dive by returning to the descent line, and ascending back to the surface.

Deep Diver – Depth Range 20 to 30 mtrs

With our equipment on, and pre dive safety check carried out, we enter the water and start our descent down the reference line, to the task area. Here we perform an easy exercise to highlight how various colours are affected at depth. A torch is shone onto a colour card, which brings the colours back, and then removed so you can see which colours disappear!

No stop time, and gas allowing, we then finish the dive with an underwater tour, followed by an ascent back up the reference line and a 3 minute safety stop.

Underwater Navigator – Depth Range 6 to 12 mtrs

With equipment on, we carry out our pre dive safety check and enter the water.

Our first exercise is to determine the number of kick cycles and average amount of time to cover a distance of 30 mtrs. With this completed, and written down on your slate, we carry out an underwater navigation using natural references only for 30 mtrs . Our aim is to return within 15 mtrs of the starting point. Our next exercise is to perform a reciprocal navigation. We’re going to head out in one direction for 30 mtrs, and then turn 180 degrees and head straight back. We’re aiming to get within 6 metres of the start. Our final exercise is a square pattern. We’re going to get you to navigate a square, each side 30 mtrs long, and aim to return within 8mtrs of the starting point.
